i'm in, as i'm following you too. i'm enjoying your report! as for securing your items while away from your bike...you could buy a bike cover and it would all be out of sight. or use your blue tarp to do the same thing but it would take more time and lots of shock cords. i have an old hobie 16 forestay--stanless steel cable with eyelets on each end--that i run through my jacket sleeves, pant legs, helmet and both wheels, and pad locked under the cover. this only keeps the honest people, honest. Lowes hardware stores sell a small squeeze bottle of chain lube...don't forget to lube at the end of the day :)
