Usually a transmission will warn you by showing garbage in, and/or discolored gear oil, just curious if the final drive is like that also.
sounds crazy but the only warning was the oil leak the previous service showed no signs, once the cage broke up it pushed the bottom of the seal out , even in this state the wheel was running smoothly :eek
after this i made a point of buying a new seal as part of the service so i could pop it out and check rivets on the cage the cage was secure at every service
its one of the things i love about the pre 1200 bikes relatively cheap and easy to fix
