Back in ī87 I installed a straight-through-muffler meant for a XT 500 (silver tank) to my ī83 KTM 500 GS Rotax. It was loud as hell, not even bearable back then. I solved the issue with a cone made from steel mesh and filled it with porous materia (pieces of bricks and similar), then closed the cone. I installed a piece of round aluminum to four cross-wires drilled through the endcap, on which the pin of the cone rested. Result: Sporty, but not too loud and it only backfired when I had to switch to reserve. Your approach with mesh is very similar in itīs effect.
