if you leave your fuel tap on (or it leaks) and the float valve in the carby isn't sealing properly, the float bowl will fill and excess fuel will dribble through the inlet manifold into the piston.
From there it will leak down past the rings into the bottom of the motor - hence smelling the oil to see if it has fuel in it ...
You should also check the air filter ... if this *is* happening, then the float bowl can also overflow in the other direction - toward the air filter. You'll find the filter wet with fuel and possibly a fuel puddle in the bottom of the airbox.
