Hip armor and D30

I thought the hip armor is in a weird place myself and its really thick. I ended up removing mine. If you plan on removing it you may want to go down a size on the waist. I am almost out of range on adjustment now and with the D30 in place it was spot on.

And not to get in a D30 debate, but it hardens upon impact, right?
I would like to hear someone in the know explain this as well. I too ride in the cold and the knees do get hard and seem to lose their impact absorption ability.
