Cool sounds like he prepped for success. The way it was done at ASU anyone in addition to your 3 advisors could ask questions at your defense and there was a krusty old Prof in the biology department who was infamous for showing up just to ask a barrage of questions to f-with the candidate, nothing was off the table with him, anything from basic high school science to stuff unrelated to your current thesis. I actually liked the guy but had seen him in action and it could get ugly, I dodged the bullet as he had a conflicting engagement the day I did mine. I was a bit bummed as it was a point of pride with anyone who suffered and survived his interrogation.
