They called those abortions "Packardbakers". The history, as I've read it, was the two merged in an attempt to compete with the big 3 (as did Nash and Hudson, which eventually brought about American Motors). Both were in some money trouble, but Packard didn't have any idea just how bad off Studebaker was. Stude management got rid of most of the Packard execs, and the race to oblivion began. It's a shame, because both companies had some good product before their downturn (though Packard did have some ill-conceived dalliances with things like air suspension). Would have been nice if they had survived and maybe been swept into AMC.
