A buddy of mine has an '86 XR600R - and I was going to swap the CDIs to see if that's the problem. But I have looked at a couple of replacement houses and they all show date ranges of 1988 to 2000.
Can I use the older CDI to test for spark?
Like Christian said, start with the easy things like a new spark plug and plug cap and take a little of the cap wire before you rescrew it.
Also, visually check your wiring harness where possible without having to remove the entire thing. Look for bad spots / connections, pay special attention to the frame ground.
Also, check or disconnect the kill switch, it could be robbing you off a spark right there if it's shorting out.
The stator could be the problem, but is expensive to replace, so measure it if you can.
I replaced my pulse generator myself recently with a good used one from Ebay, was about 30 bucks, so that's not too bad.
Let us know where you stand, good luck !
