If you don't shut off the petcock each night, and you have a leaky float needle/seat, then the fuel tank liquid will try to seek the lowest level it can. That would be your crankcase .....full of gas. Not good. The closed petcock keeps fuel from leaving the tank. On bikes of this vintage You want to shut off the petcock every night anyway. A good friend of mine lost 5 vintage Bultacos, his garage and all his tools and nearly his house from a gas puddle explosion triggered by his garage furnace and gas fumes from this mistake.
