The Helvetic Confederation. The name Switzerland ("Schweiz" in German, "Schwyz" in Swiss-German) actually comes from one of the three founding Cantons (they were independent counties before and united against the Romans) that started the Confederation in 1291. They were "Uri", "Unterwalden", and "Schwyz".
