If the gaskets aren't good, they can allow too much air to enter the circuit during start up and then you have difficult cold starting. Trying new gaskets and ensuring the jet in the corner of the bowl is clear might be an easy fix.
There's a loctite product that I've used on the choke cover in place of a gasket that works great. It doesn't have the tendency to get sucked in like that tiny gasket likes to do. I can't remember the specific product, but it was transparent red and called "anaerobic gasket maker" or something like that. Maybe this stuff? http://www.amazon.com/Loctite-38655-.../dp/B0002KKTTA
