There are some vendors who sell a total replacement tail piece which is made from aluminum. I replaced mine with the Jesse tail piece which bolts directly to the frame of the bike. From there you could use any system such as your Givi mounting bracket. Here is a pic:


Yamaha updated the original rack after a couple failures offroad in SA. Did your friend have this update (the new rack had a steel reinforcement rod in its base)?
