Josh , The general idea is to get the best reading of the ambient air temperature possible. Sensing as little as possible of the engine heat the better off you are.
Also remember engines run better on cool dense air... sooo drilling holes is the air box is not a good thing - you can pick up warm air from the engine.

Well I didn't drill the airbox I drilled the snorkel. Some folks cut it off but that just lets in a lot of water when you ride in the rain. I drilled strategic holes in the snorkel in front of the stock air temp sensor. Than I routed the HTC Juice temp sensor so that the tip of it is as far up the snorkel as possible. It sits almost at the opening where the freshest air is being drawn in.
