What you are probably running into is spoken Catalan , not the same but resembles Spanish. Spain is bi-lingual or Tri(ce)- lingual ... or Quattro lingual if Basque etc are counted.

You nailed it correct with the Catalan, Sjoerd, which I've found both in Barcelona and now in Valencia. Here, not only the spoken dialect, but included in much of the signage as well.
Mexico, Canada, and the U.S. all have their thick regional dialects as well.
Parts of Louisiana have people beyond understanding on the first hearing.
