I rode up to my workspace this morning and re-checked the drive (yup, still ever-so-slightly wobbly and just moist at the seal) before taking it off. The 33:11 I kept from my crashed 1100 went in easy peas and I've got the bearing and a new seal on order.
I'll know if I have to re-shim when I get the bearing off the axle and have the new one on hand to compare it against. The tooth wear on the gears looks good and consistent across the profile, and the drained oil didn't have metal flakes in suspension.
Just under 112k miles, mostly on that original bearing - I'm not unhappy.
I wonder how many chain and sprocket sets that would have been on a bike without the ?problematic? BMW fd.
