The bear was not too close - that is indeed just a pretty good lens. The bison - yeah, I was that close. After I got home I read up about them a bit more, statements like:

" At the time bison ran wild, they were rated second only to the Alaska brown bear as a potential killer, more dangerous than the grizzly bear. In the words of early naturalists, they were a dangerous, savage animal that feared no other animal and in prime condition could best any foe[26] " (Wikipedia)

Glad I read that AFTER I had to roll past a few of them, very close up...
