Just don't wait for a breakdown. Find a good 990 engine now, swap it out when you have a free weekend. Keep your carbs, take the timing wheel from your 950, and sell the rest for parts.
Edit: OK, I spent a lot more than a weekend changing mine, but only because I got the bike back from the shop in a basket, and had to figure out where everything went.
