One of the issues of a fire like this is the sterilization of the soil from the heat. We had a very hot fire a few years ago above Kernville (MacNally Fire). That area is all scrub brush, the trees haven't returned.
I was part of a group that planted about 400+ trees along a trail our Jeep Club maintains. It's been so dry since the fire that there is less than 5% of those trees have survived. It's going to be a VERY long time before trees return to that area.
It's also interesting that the Rim Fire is burning through an area that was burned 47 years ago. It was heavily replanted and I went through there during the Sonora 49'er a few years back. Interesting to see an area of forest with nothing but ~20' trees. I suspect the whole thing is all gone...again.
