Green coolant erodes hoses from the inside. If you wait until they start to swell, you take the chance of catastrophic failure, and unlike a car, there's very little keeping the hot (now boiling, with the pressure removed) coolant from scalding your legs. With mesh gear, it could run down into your boots and absolutely destroy your feet before you could get stopped and get them off.

If the recommended replacement interval is every four years, you may want to pay attention to that.
