I consider crash protection to be a mandatory upgrade if I plan to ride farther than the next town. No, I don't crash all that often and I'm not in the habit of dropping bikes, but it's just shameful that most stock bikes can be so badly damaged from a simple parking lot drop.
Add in off-road riding, and it's amazing what can get broken.
That said, most of the cash on my bikes goes into the suspension. You can't see most of it, but it makes the bikes a lot safer and a lot more fun!
