In Kansas there is no sales tax advantage. You pay tax based on the retail value of the bike, no matter how the transaction is handled. The legislature fixed the $1.00 loophole several years ago. Trades make sense from a "good faith" standpoint. I'm much more willing to trust someone who is handing over real property (that I can inspect) than I am of somone who is handing me paper (that might be counterfit or forged).
