Getting some to all of the weight off the front tire can be a critical survival skill. I have had to ride over extremely large/deep potholes, a 2x4 spinning down the highway, and a dog. In each case, lofting the front tire over the obstacle was probably the difference between staying upright and tasting asphalt.

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.
