Additionally many breweries prefer to prefill the growlers using a counter pressure filler as it makes the growler last much longer. It it was a Wedge growler they should have at least given you credit for returning the original.
No, I'm from the Johnson City TN area and the growler was from a local place. They wanted a $4 deposit for their growler + the cost of the beer and also only offer the Iron Rail IPA, I happen to like the Iron Rail, so that is not an issue. Maybe the "special filler" was a pressure filler to preserve carbonation.
