Excellent idea! I'll try it. Maybe a spring loaded band with 2 or 3 levels of holes so it can be slid up and down as well as rotated.

By the way I tried using 91% rubbing alcohol and it sooted up the tea pot terribly, but HEET burns clean.

Being an incurable tinkerer that can never leave well enough alone, the first thing I thought of was... Why not make a band that goes around stove that has strategically drilled holes in it such that if you rotate it you can vary the number of holes that line up with the ones on the stove and thus produce flame. Voila - adjustable heat settings!
