This reminds me of when an oncoming vehicle has a burnt out headlight. It appears as though they're miles away, and then suddenly they're within a hundred feet of you (or less), which results in an abrupt shock to the system. It's also difficult, with the small amount of reaction time, to judge the distance between your vehicle and the oncoming vehicle, as you're about to pass one another.
