I've got an R80ST and I used to have a girlfriend who if she wanted to ride on the bike she had to have a back rest.

I spent some time trying to figure out the best way to make a mount that wasn't permanent, wasn't super ugly, and that I could mount a Givi monokey plate to.I had no welding or serious fabrication tools,
I was also pretty broke,

The idea I came up with was clamps for the forward grab handle
Then extruded aluminum box tubes notched at the bottom to fit around the cross bar of the rack. "L" brackets at the top

I used a hose clamp that held the square tube down onto the rack.
For the "L" brackets I used steel, since it was slightly more forgiving for vibrations and I didn't want it to fail at the corner of the "L" bracket.
