Motion pro makes oem style levers for that bike at about a third the price of oem. I already bought a spare set of levers for jen to keep on hand. And I'm sure you know for a beginer playing around its a good idea to loose mirrors as well.

We should catch up soon for a couples/beginers ride. The C&D canal down here probably has about 75 miles of straight dirt road with no trafic. Pretty much a road that parallels the canal with three levels of road. There is probably a 20 mile stretch you can run without jumping on the road. I'll dust off the F650
