th 2007
Matt’s ringing alarm clock, and two phones woke me up at 10am, which was ok since we didn’t go to bed until 5. He hooked it up with some awesome buttermilk pancakes and sausage to get our bellies full for the missions of the day.
Then I noticed I was getting shaggy so I hit up the old noggin’ with the clippers, and then with a razor. Awesome.
Wait, what is this? As I came out of the bathroom I found that a package had been delivered…
The suspense was killing me…
Success! A brand new reel from flashstromer on ADV! Frickin awesome! Thanks a million bro!!
So we headed off in Matt’s truck for a full day of exploring. First he got me addicted to something completely new to me. Heroin. God it makes you feel so good and all I can think about is that needle goin….Just kidding. Actually he turned on the 4X4 and we went looking for a Geocache close to his house. What a neat way to explore the terrain. Hiking with a purpose. I signed up on the site as Kaneman1 and really look forward to finding some of these on my own! I signed the logbook and left my card, how cool would it be if a fellow cacher checked out the site?!?
After that we had a quick stop at
Dryden Lake. I really enjoy the scenery here and its hard to believe only 2 weeks ago Matt was running amuck on his snowmobile!
Matt wanted me to meet his friend Pat and his fiancé Amanda right down the road so we dropped by and I watched their dog throw up. Poor guy. We had a meeting scheduled with another of Matt’s friends, Erin, at
Cornell University. This place is a massive facility and our two hour tour didn’t even begin to cover all of it. This is definitely a liberal college. The cafeteria even had all the food labeled as vegan or the varying degrees thereof, and the bumper stickers told the story.
Yikes!! RUN AWAY!!!
Erin and Matt were good hosts, and I got a great history lesson on Cornell. Beautiful campus, although ridiculously expensive. Matt figured since they had so much money here he’d just take their fork from the cafeteria
Speaking of the cafeteria. OH MY GOD!! They had everything and I took advantage of the all you can eat. Thanks for hookin it up
Erin!
This tower is legendary. Someone managed to get a
pumpkin on the top of it and it stayed there until it began to rot. No one knows how or why…we thought about sending it to Mythbusters to see if they can solve the
mystery of the tower pumpkin.
They also have a war memorial for all the Cornell graduates lost in different wars. This is the World War II memorial, by far the largest.
Seemed like an interesting place. In the chapel was the crypt of the founder of Cornell, Ezra Cornell. Along with a HUGE organ. I would love to hear it play…but only if there wasn’t a service involved as well!
Cool bike. So many expensive cars running around here…
Somehow they knew I was coming to Cornell and the students rallied together to make an anatomically correct statue of me. I really want to thank them for their hard work and dedication to the Kaneman Kause. Thanks a lot guys.
And some more buildings…
Then the three of us hiked down to the
Ithaca Falls and saw this on the way…
We are gangsta, how bout you?
So we made it to the falls and I risked life and limb to entertain the masses.
We took
Erin back to work after that and I want to thank her for the lunch, totally cool of her.
Goldsport Cycles was next on the list to check on the progress of my bike. The mechanic, Jason (I think that’s his name) was doing a really bang-up job on the bike. He knows all about my journey and wants to make sure the bike is in tip-top shape. He went over everything with a fine-tooth comb, rewired my 12V outlet and electric vest connection. He repacked the bearings on my wheels and said he was prepping it just like he would a bike getting ready to run the
Dakar. He also said that the dealership I bought the Strom from in
San Antonio did a really great job with the initial prep work. Unfortunately he did find that my left fork tube is bent from the accident, but said he would take care of that. There is a reason Goldsport has been in business 30 years, excellent customer service…something that is all too rare these days. The V-Strom is looking pretty rough now, but is running great and I have complete confidence in this bike.
While I was there Jeff, GSBones, called to check on the Strom and I got the opportunity to talk to him!
Matt snapped a pic of this badboy that was back in the shop
After Goldsport Matt needed to stop by his office at Borg Warner. I found myself back in a world that I left behind a lifetime ago..
On the way to the
Taughannock Falls we checked out this graffiti. I wish it could all be as awesome and detailed as this was.
Save the planet from EVIL I will!!
Matt took care of this guy in the meantime
Then we made the falls!!
Then we ran some errands…blah blah blah, nothing too exciting. The guys at Verizon though did do a great job setting up the sync on my Treo. The Treo really is a blessing, now when I get emails with a place to stay offered I can drag it to the contacts on my Outlook and sync it with the Treo keeping all offers close by. Not only that but the broadband connection is solid and very fast letting me keep up with this monster of a thread without wasting time. Very thankful for this gift!
Anyway, so that was my day. Wait, no it wasn’t, it was like 2 days worth yet I’m not quite done yet. We still had to make another first for me, a visit to the Winery. The Americana Winery to be exact. We sampled 12 different kinds of wine and I had an awesome time there. I even picked up a bottle of Sweet Rosie and some fudge for a special friend. That stuff was amazingly good.
Maybe 12 was 8 too many….
After a quick piece of pizza we headed to the Commons, kind of the downtown area of
Ithaca, where the students and hippies hang out. And there are A LOT of hippies here!! They crack me up man, living in the past….but they’re ok I guess, if taken in stride. Matt’s parking job was um…less than fully legal.
As the rain started falling we walked into a head/hippie shop and I taught Matt about bongs…he’s so young and innocent!
I haven’t played since I left my house and have definitely lost any touch I once had.
We walked across the street to a photography exhibit, artsy, and not to my taste, but neat to experience anyway. Matt bet me I couldn’t get a hug from one of the locals. He lost...this is Kate, she was a great sport.
Whew!! Killer day, very full day. Had so much fun hanging with Matt and meeting people all day. Tomorrow I will pick up the Strom and head off with Matt to meet GSBones, which I’m very much looking forward to. Soooo…on that note, I will post this and hang with Matt for a while since I’ve been a poor guest for the last few hours, but I think he’s excited about this post anyway.
