Well, Nick, at this point, it sounds like the metering assembly might be giving up the ghost. I have not seen anyone replace the assembly with a spacer. But, that doesn't mean it can't be done. If the assembly is truly shot, a good candidate for a spacer would be the inner sleeve in the assembly itself. I would just be sure the assembly is shot before you butcher it. Did you try to pull that plug out to see if there's any way to lube the gears inside? The only other thing I can think of is to replace the assembly (and the cable, if you so choose).
