Mouting the GPS to the roadbook holder isn't as treacherous as you might think. Last year when I bit it in the desert the GPS mount roated back and down on the roadbook holder, which then took the brunt of the force and left the GPS with only minor cosmetic damage. I rotated it back up and it was good to go. The roadbook holder had to be removed and straightened later .
The plastic "fairing" on the 640A provides very little crash protection for the things behind it.
