Los Angeles, California took a street away, or created a street in some cases, for the "Orange Line" high-speed, limited stop bus (no cages allowed on this street). I think it's worked out fine IMO.

I dont think you're going to get any grief for a dedicated bike lane here in LA from the Bikers...
