I also did the canbus plug method, ( BMW part number 83300413585). I soldered the repair plug to my Streetpilot power cable and shrink-tubed the new connector. Cable modification and installation on my F800GS only took an hour or so. Fairly easy and works great. The F800GS canbus system keeps the GPS powered up for 20 seconds after turning off the bike.
