Seven Sons Off Road Ride

The Bay Bulls trail is a 20 km section of Newfoundland's old Trepassey branchline railway route. We picked up the trail today near the Hayloft Lounge, in the town known as the Goulds, and eventually made it all the way to the town of Bay Bulls. Now you might ask what's the big deal about a railbed trail. Well this old rail line has been defunct for nearly eighty years! The rails were removed in 1932, so nature has had plenty of time to reclaim the trail, and turn it into one heck of a mess.

This trail is basically a seemingly endless series of rock and log filled flooded trenches. It's kind of like riding an ordinary rocky and technical Avalon Peninsula trail, like the Shoal Bay trail, but with all the nasty obstacles hidden under water. The water is so deep in places that you must bypass the trail altogether, and ride through deep bog instead, to make any headway. The trail also has a couple of 97 year old railway trestles that you have to cross (Construction was completed on this rail line in 1911!). One trestle has a series of telephone pole size logs laid over it for it's deck, and the other has been recently decked over nicely with fresh plywood.

We had seven RTR members along for the ride, today. There were a few tip overs, and everyone got sideways once or twice, but neither of us fully drowned our bikes. The same could not be said for one of the two young lads we came across, about 5 kms along the trail. One of them was riding a small Chinese dirtbike, and had drowned it with water over the carb, in one of the many deep trenches. It was lucky for them that Bill and Lorenzo showed up, and quickly had the bike up and running again, after draining the muddy water out of the carb, and drying off the sparkplug. RTR to the rescue once again. Nicely done, gents! ;)

Here's a map of our route.

And here's a bunch of photos...
