Oh this is fun. I was actually able to get my wife's strap-style . . .wait for it . . .jar opener between the filter and flange of my R12 GS. Tightish filter came off fine.

Alternatively, JB Weld a couple of 1 inch nuts on the bottom and tell some man-hater that your bike has two big nuts down there. They will twist it right off for you.

This problem is apparently one of those irrational worry things to generate this much interest or maybe it is the right level of complexity that even us ham-fisted wrenchers have an opinion and a shred of experience (hence, WE ARE EXPERTS!)

    Good luck with your project.

At this point I think it's time to suggest unscrewing the bike from the filter. :deal

Someone beat you to it. They told him to put the filter in a bench vice and turn the bike....voila! :evil

I found this trick somewhere on this forum when I had this issue with my 09 GSA. Get a cup type filter wrench from auto store, one that fits the closest, lay a strip of emory cloth across filter, push on the cup type filter wrench and turn. This has served me well on 2 occasions now!

before i actually found one that fit used and cheap. i had the $2 one from the autoparts store that was just a little to small. Put 4 vertical cuts down the sides and taped it on. worked like a champ for years!

I got it off using a pair of channel locks and nothing else. Don't know about 90 degrees...

Grab it and twist it. Make a grrrr sound when you do it.

Well i finally yanked this sucker off. You can see the method that finally worked. I took someones advice from this thread and kept applying a constant force without trying to really crank on it....after about 10 seconds it started to give but still gave quite a bit of resistance for at least 180 degrees of loosening!
Here is the filter after removal with wrench still screwed on.

Great job! In the future, K&N makes filters for us with a socket welded on. Amazon actually sells them for $10. I've been using them since my 6000mi service.

Thanks...but I'm not sold on K&N filtration. Based on what I've read about thier air filters, I'll stick with stock...at least until warranty is up!:D
