Ok, here's a good one. I was completing the annual maintenance on my 2011 R1200GSA and opened the box with the oil filter only to notice that it was the filter for my 2000 R1200C. This was a big disappointment as I don't have another filter and the nearest BMW dealer is about 3 hrs north in San Antonio. I decided to give it a try and low and behold, it fit. It is the same thread and diameter but a little taller than the one for the GS. It doesn't leak and seems to work perfectly.

So here's the question. Is there any reason that I should be concerned with using the R1200C filter on my GS temporarily until i can get the correct filter on the bike. The only thing I could think of is that there might be some difference in the flow rate of the oil between the two bikes but that seems very unlikely.

    Thoughts.

Please be kind. This is not my first oil change and I have never made this mistake before.

If it doesn't leak...shouldn't be a problem...so order your other 'correct' one and you'll be good.

    BTW..."cleared to land...taxi to the ramp".:clap

PS...don't do it again or we'll "Aircraft on Ground" your aircraft.:cry

I don't tell the dealer anything. I try not to ask them much either. Most of the time I find their advice misleading or just plan wrong.

As long as your bash plate still mounts, it should be ok. In the FAQ, they list a Dodge Neon filter for the 1200GS, but its too long for aftermarket bash plates. I've been buying the K&N filters off of Amazon for $15 and I see Touratech now carries them for the same price. No special wrench needed for them either. They use a socket for removal.

If it fits and there isn't any interference with the skidplate, replace it when you do the oil next.

If there is interference, refrain from riding anything too gnarly until you can get the proper length filter fitted.

The skid plate does fit so I guess I will keep it until the next oil change. Thanks for the tip on the K&N filters on Amazon. I will order some tonight.

Looks like they want $24.44 now. Any links to the $15.00 ones?

    Check with Beemer boneyard,
Think I got a dozen for about $15 each shipped, including new washer. These were BMW filters not aftermarket

I've got over 50K on my R1200c and about 12K on my GS with zero issues. Can't say much about the KLR but I'm happy with my Bimmers.

I'm not really trying to bad mouth dealers but the one in San Antonio is a little sketchy. I learned a long time ago that there are some good guys out there but most don't really know much more than I do and they care a lot less about my bike.

I am speaking from experience regarding your local dealer, as he was mine, WAS mine. I have found out so many things since our seperation. Best wishes D.
