XR650L and U.S. spec NX650 5th gear ratios are the same. Try loading the FMX650 gear ratios - they should be the same as for the Euro-spec NX650.
You wouldn't think 600 rpm would feel that much different I'm not worried about top speed, more about maintaining a constant cruising speed without reving so high that you start oil consumption. Out here in the middle of no where cruising speed is around 70 or better on two lane highway. Kilroy is probably right, it's the difference in color of power band or the oil. Got to be one of those two
For the most part I actually hate the red colored power band it just happens to be the best option for my current needs... Someday I want a bike with two orange power bands for highway and dirt road travel.
Hmm, I use the white powerband and rotella T, must be why mine is a dog in 5th. I also have been running a 140/80 MT21 in the rear. I'm also not worried about it blowing up. If it does, then it's big bore, FCR and NX 2nd and 5th time!
So here is my two cents worth. I like a 15/43 for road trips with Pirelli MT 90's. It goes down the road nice and smooth at 70 mph and 47mpg. (with minimal oil consumption) and will still lift the front wheel in 1st. gear. This set up works great for open dirt and two lane blacktop. Now for more aggressive two tracks and light trail rides I use a 14/43 and Dunlop 606's . For aggressive trail rides I use my KTM 450 EXC. It takes me about 4hr's and 4 beers to switch the set up. My bike has a 102mm J&E 10.5 piston fmf exhaust and most of Dave's mods. I used a Innovate LM 1 wide band air/fuel ratio meter to set the jetting at 55 pilot 162 main and 1mm under the stock needle. So there you have it. That's what works for me your results may vary.
The Dave's mod helped a lot. But I am still tired of playing catch up with the cv in the tighter stuff. I was thinking of gearing down to a 50t rear. But I am going to wait till after trying my XRR carb to see if it has the low end I want.Under most situations the cv works good, but if you lug it for a bit it has no power when you need it to.
I've got the 15/45 set up and at 71ish mph my trail tech vapor reads 5k rpm. I may not have the vapor setup properly (I still can't figure the ppr thing out, it's set on 2 right now). However if the bike really is under 5k at over 75mph that puts my mind at ease and i will do highway all day swapping to the 14t front for the trails.
Crf230 front fender from ufo. I bought it off ebay for $30 delivered. It bolts right up and has the slot for the wires. They pinch some but nothing to be concerned about I imagine. Noticeable difference with high speed buffering, seems to cool the bike down at least 5 degrees based on my xrs only temp gauge and it looks awesome!!! Thanks 3girlsdad for the recommendation
Gearingcommander. scroll down the page and there is a table labeled,"RPM differences due to drive train setup changes:" It's really a cool website.
Does any one know what Honda recommends as a red line ? I'm thinking it's some thing like 6500. Cruising at 5000 for long periods may be causing Poor fuel millage, oil burning and over heating. Most engines are happy cruising at about half of red line.
Hello fellas and fellets. Felt compelled to write on here as I have been lurking since I bought my new 650l and had some issues with the gas tank. Happy to say that I took my first ride on I79 with a motorcycle here in pittsburgh Pa, and the 650l is awesome! Although, since I am still a little wet behind the ears with motorcycling, I made the trip short, only 9 miles on the highway, and man, was it chilly this morning! I can really understand why, NO OFFENSE, older gentlemen buy goldwings, and electra-glides... Those fairings, windshields, etc, would have been nice! That brings me to me question, what windshields are out there, or yinz recommend, for the 650l that would help with the buffeting/wind? I am 6'4", and the bike is totally stock, although not for long... I plan on Dave's Mod, Uni, and removing the snorkel after the first 600 mile service.
Cee baileys windscreen as linked a few post up. The screen helps but it directs wind straight up into my helmet. It just mounts to the oem bug screen and kinda just lays down. Some sort of support to keep it elevated would help but I haven't come up with anything as of yet.
Agreed it looks nice.... ....ride with it on high speed forest/gravel roads in the rain and report back.
