Doesn't the "SMT" have 17" Rims? The largest sprocket KTM offer is 42. The 17" rims do NOT use the same sprockets as the 18" ADV or SE rims.
17/45 gearing on a 17" rear has a nice balance. I wish I had run into you at the KTM Rally, CJ, I really wanted to check out your 2wd!
I prefer 17/45 combo on any setup over the 16/42, b/c there are more teeth in the system - Longer life- and you don't get the unusual Sprocket wear with an Odd set of teeth count that you do with an Even.
I actually have a 16T on the front.. By the way its a 990 SMT.. But I want more low end torque. Stock sprocket on the rear is 41. What are my options,,I've only found a 42T ..Will that make much difference? Thank you
That 16/42 and 17/45 are super close on the ratios. I can tell as much difference between a new tire and a worn tire in RPM/MPH/traction, as 16/42 vs 17/45. 17/45 had a tiny bit more grunt/bite than the 16/42 does. I am presently 16/42 with a 17 on the shelf for slab trips, after running the 17/45 for the last set of gears.
yeh ok the SMT are different but below is the part number for the 45T that KTM make for the SE. Price is from Boltons in Australia. <TABLE><TBODY><TR><TD class=boxsectiontext>Reference:</TD><TD class=boxsectiontext>20</TD><TR><TD class=boxsectiontext>Part number:</TD><TD class=boxsectiontext>600 10 051 045</TD></TR><TR><TD class=boxsectiontext>Description:</TD><TD class=boxsectiontext>B2 REAR SPROCKET 45-T 03</TD></TR><TR><TD class=boxsectiontext>Retail Price:</TD><TD class=boxsectiontext>112.20</TD></TR><TR><TD class=boxsectiontext>Qty On Fiche Diagram:</TD><TD class=boxsectiontext>1</TD></TR><TR><TD class=boxsectiontext>Qty In Stock:</TD><TD class=boxsectiontext>1 [?]</TD></TR><TR><TD class=boxsectiontext>Qty In Shopping Basket</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE> Want to do a 520 conversion (not recommended due to much lower life as I have experienced) use the front 520 conversion sprocket for an RC8 from the KTM Hardparts.
Dirt Tricks carries 45t Ironman sprockets for the KTM 950/990. Haven't used them on my KTM 950SE but they lasted a long time on my KTM 450 XCF and come with a 1 year warranty. http://www.dirttricks.com/ordering_sprockets.htm
This thread is going to cause much confusion for future searchers. Reason: -The 990 SMT has cast 17" rims from the factory. http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/ktm/2012-ktm-990-smt-review-91341.html -The 950/990 ADV, and 950 SE sprockets many have stated and listed Above WILL NOT WORK on the 17" rims. -The 17" OEM rims have a different Sprocket setup as well as a different Brake Rotor setup. -Custom Sprockets can be MADE for the 17" Marchesini Rims, but KTM does NOT offer them.
Well.. I went ahead and bought a 15 T for the front. Not looking for top speed. Most of my riding is in the mountains in South America. Any experiences with it on a 990 SMT ? Thanks
