We don't need no stinkin' pushrods:

Rolls Royce Merlin, just a guess, but probably closer in power to weight to a modern motorcyle engine than any production V8 pushrod engine.

    cheers,

    Is this true?

If pushrods are just as good as over head cams, then I would guess that not having ABS is just as good as having ABS. Motus drew the line on having drum brakes so drum brakes must not be just as good as disc brakes.

Hmmm...you know when you make a statement like that, an engineer is gonna check it out:

    Rolls Royce Merlin 61: 1580hp, 1640lb, 0.96lb/hp
    Chevy LS9: 638hp, 530lbs, 0.83lb/hp
    BMW S1000RR: 193hp, 132lbs, 0.68 lb/hp

Looks like the 'vette is closer to the BMW than the Merlin

Here is the ultimate piston engine from WWII (and it doesn't have any conventional poppet valves):

    The sleeve valve Napier Sabre.

Napier Sabre: 3,040hp, 2,360lbs, 0.77lb/hp, barely beats the Corvette

    Excellent!

And how much power will that LS9 make @ 40k feet? I suspect that a bunch of the Merlin's weight is tied up in the two stage geared supercharger with intercoooler, and pressure carb. Nothing like a war to promote advances in technology.:clap

It's all good, pushrods or finger followers.

    cheers,
    melby

Good point, those aero power ratings are at around 20k feet. There was a tank/torpedo boat version of the merlin that made around 700hp but I don't remember the weight.

I guess we are getting off topic, but how much power would the merlin make on 91 octane nolead? The original merlin made about 1050hp on 100 octane ethyl (IIRC).

I love old Aero engines! They are like 2000hp swiss watches.

Might as well, there's no on topic to discuss.. we'd gone around in circles a few times already.. and the bike is still not for sale.

The Motus is vaporware, the only bikes that'll ever be built are the prototypes. Its the same old story thats happened a million times before :deal
I do hope they at least sell/share the engine tech tho :nod

If the MOTUS fuckers aren't at Daytona with production bikes, I vote that GB locks this thread and/or moves it to "needless dickery".

They are having a bit of trouble with the red tape and government regs. I wouldn't be putting any money down on that bet.

I hope they get it sorted as I am (for the most part) against having to meet the vast majority of useless government regs.

Just a bunch of unnecessary crap dreamt up by ignorant public employees in an attempt to try to justify their pay check.

If you are pissed about the MSRP on the Motus Gov. Red tape is the reason above all else. :deal

Here's a link to the EPAs page on certification of new on-highway motorcycles. Go to the .pdf at the bottom for a 22 page brief on the certification steps for a little light reading.:lol3

    http://www.epa.gov/otaq/roadbike.htm

On a quick look at the certification test data for 2013 (Nov2012 data), there is no evidence of 'Motus' being listed as a certified mfg or any other engine that might possibly be the 1600cc V4. Could be that Motus has the paperwork submitted but not in time for it to be published?

    cheers,

I believe US Highland ran into the same roadblocks trying to get their motor certified. They were behind schedule and taking heat for it also. The tragic death of their CEO and chief engineer rendered it all moot, unfortunately.
