The border El Ceibo/ El Naranjo has all the facilities for a legal border crossing , including doing all the paperwork for your vehicle . There is a Banco Del Ejercito agencie on the Mexican side of the border .

I should be in my village in late Feb., south of Tikal and north of the Rio Dulce, so keep in touch and maybe we can meet for some road stories.

My wife and I are going to be flying into Guatemala from Oct 7 to Oct 23. The primary reason is we are seeing a fertility clinic in Guatemala City. I am not sure what our schedule will be with the clinic. I think I will only be needed for one appointment. I think the wife will have 3 to 4.
I hope to see as much of the country as I can while I am there. It would be nice to see some by motorcycle. Is there any place to rent a motorcycle? A small one would be fine.
Is there anyone to ride with?
I would like to see Tikal and am facsinated with volcano's too.
Are cheap SIM cards and calling cards available there? If so, I will bring my unlocked phone.

I guess I am just looking for general advice and maybe people to meet.

Thanks,

steve

Steve: There are a couple of moto rental places in Antigua which is about 1/2 hr out of Guatemala City. One is alongside the Tanque La Unión park about 3 blocks from the parque central. They have smaller dual-sport bikes.
Ceiba Rents in Antigua, tel 7832.4168 www.ceibarent.com used to have bikes from KLR250's to a 750 Africa Twin to rent. Don't know if they still do that

SIM cards are about $7 or $8 USD. Unlike Mexico, cell phone calling rates are very cheap. I thinks they are 5¢ USD to call the US. Tigo & Movistar have some of the best coverage in the country.

Guatemala City is dangerous and ugly. You and your wife might want to stay in Antigua instead. Dan

Steve: This is Chris from CATours in Antigua. We are the shop that dtop1 referred to along Tanque de la Union. We have lots of great motorcycle tours to see the top sights in Guatemala! Feel free to contact me through ADV or our website if you're interested in more information.

here's a post from a fellow ADV rider that just passed through: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=13795657#post13795657

Steve is right that Ceibra is in Antigua as well, but just wanted to let everyone know that they do not rent motorcycles anymore, just scooters. Its mostly the same with us, with exceptions for long-term rentals with experienced riders.

Just wanted to give a nod of thanks to CA Tours. The wife, dad-in-law, and I went out on a day tour with them yesterday and had an awesome time. Our guide, Dave, was great, the bikes were solid, and the riding a hoot. My sister-in-law has family in the area so we will definitely be returning for more adventure in the future. Highly reccomended.

Hi all.

I am planning to ride from Guatemala City to Flores/El Remate and then on to Belize, but will to do it only if the roads are paved (or at least with very little dirt or gravel).
Somewhere I read that Cobán - Chisec - Sayaxche - Flores is paved and that although in bad shape most of the El Remate - Melchor de Mencos road is also paved.

Please, provide current information on this route, including the chain of towns that make it up.

Thanks in advance.

Good evening forum.

I have to make a visa run next week. I am living and working in Xela and have normally renewed myself and my UK registered bike by paying the "arrangement fee" at the immigration office in La Mesilla :D

I have run out of extension boxes on the back of my temporary import papers so this time I will be actually be (rather than just appearing to) leaving the country.

I would like to arrange some insurance for the bike. Can anybody tell me is this possible in Ciudad Cuauhtémoc, Mexico?

The quotes I am currently finding online are double what I paid when I entered Mexico from the USA some 15 months ago.

Regards,

Andrew

I rode down with friends from Reno last fall. We had a good time and people were really nice to us. Our travel options were limited somewhat by hurricane damage. Be careful. They do have a problem with crime. Especially if you get off the main roads. Read the US State department advisory. But you still should go. Dave

Here are some route suggestions from Panajachel to Antigua.

The usual route is to take the road to Solala up to the CA-1 and take that all the way to Antigua. If you're up for a little more dual-sporting, there is a much better route. Leave Panajachel headed for Godinez. Go through Godinez and stay right at the fork to head towards Patzun. Straight through Patzun to Patzicia. Here you can jump on the CA-1 or continue down the less-traveled route to Antigua through Acatenango, La Soledad, San Miguel Duenas, Antigua. If you look on Google Maps you'll be able to follow most of this.

When you make it to Antigua, stop by Moto Cafe and share some stories with fellow motorcyclists, join us for a ride, or just have a beer or cigar. Either way we look forward to hopefully meeting you.

Safe riding!

Tricepilot: There's a French couple 2-up on a 12GSA on their way to TDF. They're in Bacalar QR, I believe, right now and will cross Belize then on to Flores within the next couple of days. After that they're going to Antigua. If you cross paths, say Hello. I've been helping them with routing, etc. Their names are Christian and Mireille. DanTop
