I'm glad I read this. I thought that I was the only one whose screw driver drawer smelled like dog poop. I bought the Sears black handled ones but I dont like the tips on the phillips ones - they dont fit near as well. Guess you just have to hold your nose when you get one out.
Hey me too! I thought i left old oil that had gone rancid on them... my whole toolbox reeks and its a bit rolling one.
Thread revival! I've wondered why my tool boxes reeked for too many years. Now I know why. I've got the pasty white colored screwed drivers from Sears too.
My father bought a set of nut-drivers when I was very young, they stuck the whole time he had them, and I was just visiting this past weekend, and they still stink some 45 years later! Never thought to return them. Going back in a few weeks, might ask about them. He passed a few years ago, but mom is slow to let go of things. Like when is she going to need an acetylene torch?
Best answer yet. I usually buy the non-clear screwdrivers at flea markets for 25-50 cents each. They are made by a bunch of different brands like CAT, Snap-On, and other no-name companies, but I just get the cheap ones. The black resin material seems to be stronger and more durable than the clear stuff.
As said earlier about the Snap On's disintegrating,Snap On replaced about six of mine including my multi changing tip driver. They sent me a new driver that ratchets that's worth about $70.00 new! Those Cat branded drivers posted above are made by Snap On. I have a retired Industrial Snap On salesmen who lives by me and still sells on the side for some extra scratch. He sold me a Cat branded (made by Ingersoll Rand) impact IR231 "New" for $75.00. That mother *barks like a dog* !!! As far as my Craps men drivers, some handles will milk white,a few stink but all reside outside and still work. Purchased in the 70's. Snap On's to the rescue to prevent fastener damage when it calls for it.
Just smelled mine from I'd guess 70-80's atleast and no smell. Well a little oil/grease smell. Since they are some of the few tools of my fathers that I have that weren't stolen I'm kinda pissed at myself for breaking the very tip 1/16" off one while back. Thought I was using the one that was already broken.
My mother bought a box of tools at the auction, gave them to me to look over. Found an antique 2' level from Craftsman. When I went in to exchange it, the salesman asked why I would want to get rid of an antique? I turned it around and showed him the cracked glass. It was the only time I was sort of questioned.
Zombie thread resurrection time, and follow-up. The Snap-on screwdriver (one of a set of 6, bought in the early 1980's, that was sweating acid from the black handle) finally croaked. It dropped off my workbench and when the handle hit the concrete, it broke into many pieces. I still find it weird that only one of the set degraded like that.
go buy something at harbor fright when they have the free screwdrivers with any purchase coupon. Then swap the harbor fright handles to the craftsman drivers.
My tool box has had that smell for 30 years , never even thought twice about it , I don't snuggle and kiss them they are strictly for screwin .
