New KTM 990 Farkles

Turbojet (dumbass) with yet another post that's been hashed over 1000 times before. I see other inmates have similar questions so I thought we could recap. I just put a down payment on a 2012 WHITE 990 Adventure. Looking to make this my do-everything bike (having previously owned 1100GS, KLR 650, KLX 250, Vstrom 650 and currently 800 GS). I'm not sure about luggage but can peruse all the threads about this. I'm thinking hard luggage for long distance touring since I like packing books, cameras, etc. GOBI VS KTM/Touratech? For serious offroad I would opt for WOLFMAN soft luggage.


However immediate upgrades I am considering include heated grips, CJ Designs tail rack (with rotopax for extra fuel), CJ designs side stand relocation, and some sort of tail hard case for everyday commuting, shopping, etc. Anything that fits on the CJ Designs rear rack that comes on and off easily, possibly Pelikan hard case? I like the GIVI case on my Vstrom but it is dorky looking.
I would also like to see pix of white KTM 990 farkeled out.

Good choices so far. Personally I would also include CJs peg extensions and Bar risers (I have a Rox Riser and like it) and the Oil drain hose Mod as well.

Ergos first.

I just got my bike several weeks ago, and have changed the handlebars, grips, rear brake pedal and clutch lever.

Suspension is the next priority, with some minor bits and pieces along the way.

Tires, too.

And a Renazco or similar seat

CJ peg extensions, Renazco seat, Superplush suspension re-do, extra fuel (mine's a 2-into-1 with Adv tank), Rekluse EXP clutch, Weld86 skid plate (if you're headed for the rough stuff), better windshield.

I could go on and on.

If you're gonna ride offroad a better skidplate is a good idea. I have the weld 86; it's awesome.

This bike works so well that it will suck you in off-road; I hit a pile of rocks in the botom of a washout at speed with the suspension bottomed so hard it broke the rocks. No damage to skidplate or bike, but my buddy who was following me nearly killed himself watching it.

You're gonna love her.

I agree about ergos. A straighter bar would make this bike so much better...

I rode my 2004 950 all over North America for 7 seasons including 2 coast/coast and two Alcan5000 TSD rallys. I bought all my farkles with the bike and the bike was intended for the 2006 Acan5000 when I bought it. The following is my list:

1. KTM comfort seat (gel pad imbedded)
2. Heated grips wired to the switched circuit
3. Extra power plug for whatever direct wired
4. GPS system hardwired
5. Cee-Baily screen (subsequently removed when I went to more aero helmet)
6. Gobi luggage
7. Custom tail plate purchased here (probably many similar)
8. KTM large tailbag
9. Gerbing jacket liner
10. Akro slipons (probably a waste, but sounded nice with baffle in)
11. Cyclepump
12. 1 large tire spoon and two 8 inch jobs
13. Bead breaker
14. Specialty sockets selected for certain fasteners
15. 32mm socket and breaker bar for axle nuts
16. Waterproof riding gear and Disco boots
17. KTM electric roadbook holder and dash replacement to mount it
18. Fastway footpegs set at the lowest setting (bike too cramped between pegs and seat)
19 Various spares like levers, tubes, and fuses

The bike was great, if crude. I only used it for trips. The new 990's are much more refined in every way. The luggage was particularly handy in that I could unclip them like suit cases and use them around camp as places to sit or haul into my motel room. Plus they had no sharp corners and you can buy replacement parts. I had to modify the rear wheels by grinding down a section of the safety bead. This enabled me to fix flats to change tires trailside (which you do on 7500 mile trips throught the great white north).

I was going to get a new 990, but my son talked me into a new 690R because it was lighter for the type of solo riding I do. I don't regret it.

Both bikes used for the same purpose (travel), but I can go more placed off the beaten path with the little one.

That's about it. After market skidplate, side stand relocators etc. are something you probably will never really need.

Since this picture I have added Fastway pegs, Touratech fog light, and I just order a Scott's steering damper yesterday. Getting it set up for a trip to Alaska next year.

Unless You plan on never actually going offroad even one time (and these machines are very capable offroad). Because In Moab I saw three machines with cracked cases from hitting the sidestand The stock Skidplate is cast aluminum and breaks very easily.
I have been priviledged to follow Russ Bobbitt (National Champion) around Tahoe as well as ride with TahoeCR and MJLang (Who are both phenomenal riders) Across Nevada on Dirt roads and ripped around Moab on my 950. Cant tell you how many times I hit the skidplate/sidestand on Mine. It has taken some Truly Brutal hits. that would have busted the cases. An SRB and Skidplate are cheap insurance.

What skid plate do people like? Black Dog vs Weld86?

I went with the Touratech one but wish I went with the BDCW one. I know someone that has one and after seeing his I had regrets on mine. The BDCW just looks like it'll handle more of a beating

Like seatbelts & life insurance, you HOPE you never need them, but you'd be a fool to assume so.
