in today's bizarre news:

<section> Was this a case of a text message too far? Former Formula One driver, Northern Irishman Eddie Irvine, was this morning handed a six-month prison sentence for his part in a nightclub brawl in Milan in December 2008.
Also sentenced by judge Marco Formentin was the other protagonist in the brawl, namely Gabriele Moratti, son of former Milan mayor and education minister, Letizia Moratti.
Given that todays sentences will almost certainly be appealed, legal experts are already predicting the case will fall foul of the statute of limitations, due to expire at the end of 2015, when the case is declared null and void.
For that reason, it seems highly unlikely that either man will actually serve time. Mr Moratti was present in court this morning for the sentence, whilst Mr Irvine was not.
Witnesses in court have claimed the reason for the fight between the two was a text message sent by Mr Irvine to an ex-girlfriend of Mr Moratti.
When Mr Moratti came across Mr Irvine in the Holywood nightclub, a brief scuffle developed between them. Mr Irvine claimed he was hit from behind by Mr Moratti and that he suffered damage to an ear. After the incident, both men subsequently sued one another for assault and battery.
Corriere Della Sera Online also reported today that after the incident, Mr Irvine received threatening phone calls in his Milan hotel from someone in the Moratti entourage.
Other media sources carried reports today claiming Mr Irvines legal team had tried, in vain, to reach some form of out-of-court agreement in order to halt the proceedings.
As it is, whatever happens to both Mr Irvine and Mr Moratti, the case does not end here, since Judge Formentin has passed on the case records to the public prosecutors office. It is believed the judge will ask prosecutors to look into the possibility that some of the witnesses called by the Moratti defence team committed perjury.
Gabriele Moratti is not new to controversy. In April of last year, he paid a 49,000 fine for an illegal renovation of a warehouse in the Milanese suburbs, a building that he had converted into a luxury Batman Residence.
Eddie Irvine was a Formula One driver from 1993 to 2001, driving for the Jordan, Ferrari and Jaguar teams. His best season was probably that of 1999 when he finished second behind a Finn, Mika Hakkinen, in the drivers championship, having started the last Grand Prix of that season four points ahead of his rival.

Jenson Button's father John dies aged 70

Formula 1 driver Jenson Button's father has died of a suspected heart attack at the age of 70.John Button, who has been a strong guiding force behind his son's career which includes winning the 2009 world championship, was found dead in his home on the French Riviera by a friend yesterday.
A statement released by the driver's agent read: "It is with great sadness and regret that I can confirm John Button passed away at his home in the South of France on Sunday.
"John's children Jenson, Natasha, Samantha and Tanya and the rest of the family are clearly devastated and ask for their privacy to be respected during this extremely difficult time."

Kimi back to work
season can't be far off now surely...

Kimi Raikkonen has started simulator work ahead of his return to Ferrari for the 2014 Formula 1 season.
The Finn, who won the 2007 world championship for the Scuderia, is now in his first week working at Ferrari since agreeing to return. Ferrari has confirmed Raikkonen arrived at Maranello this morning and will spend three days working with the engineers and running in the simulator.
"It's good to be back at work," said Raikkonen. "I began by getting used to all the new systems and procedures that we will use this year. From this point of view, the simulator is really very useful."
Raikkonen missed the final two races of the 2013 season in order to have back surgery. He first visited Maranello the week before Christmas, and will stay until Wednesday on his latest visit.
Despite the fact he has not driven for Ferrari since the end of 2009 and the major rule changes for this season, Raikkonen says it's not overwhelming.
"It's true there's lots to do but the workload is not much different to what it was in the past," said Raikkonen. "For me, these days in Maranello are also an opportunity to be with the team and spend a bit more time with my many friends here."

"Jenson Button's father John had been a permanent fixture in Formula 1 since his son's debut 14 years ago.

"The perfect 'racing dad' - he was there at his son's wishes for support and advice if required, but never interfered or got in the way.

"A very decent rallycross driver in his time, John Button was a bon viveur and heartily jovial character. Rarely very far from a glass of red wine, he was popular throughout the sport.

"'Papa Smurf', as he was known, was the source of many a great story from behind the scenes. The paddock will be a duller place without him."
