Good work, nice results! Thanks for saving an early RS from being scrapped or even worse, ending up as a scrambler, bopper other hipster cafe cruiser.

(Well... We're building a scrambler also, of a '81 R100 wreck that we caught up nearby. ;) but that was a real dog.)

Thanks for your comments, I do like the original way and '78 RS actually was a dream since I was eight years old (1978) and read the test in Motorrad. That's why I want the original brakes, it's not a new bike and has to be driven that way. Actually, when you have new brake parts and adjusted calipers, they are not too bad for its age. But you have to be strong in your right hand...

Today I greased up the splines in the bevel box, just to be sure. Also fitted the Krausers.

About the tires: New Michelins are fitted. :) (Old ones beside)

Quite nice sunset about nine o'clock this evening here about 100km from the Arctic circle.

About 120 km, of them about 40 km really bad road without Tarmac, or real track in the wild. Slippery now when the snow is melting but good balance training. Maybe I should have bought a GS instead?

Changed oil in the bevel box and drive shaft.

The oil looked like copper paste. Anyone seen that oil before?
Same sort of oil in both places. [IMG]

    Changed to GL-5 transmission oil.

Some transmission oils are red when new so maybe it's just a normal color change. I would be more worried if it was cappuccino colored meaning that the oil would probably be contaminated with water.

Nice RS by the way :thumb

I have Redline transmission oil in my gearbox, but this is not even close to red... :)

But I also think this is better than water polluted oil. Weel, it would be nice to know if someone knew what kind of oil this is.

In the gearbox it was an oil coloured like smashed banana... Yellow, icecream like. Maybe Omega or something?

(Thanks, I also like my RS very much!)

Also updated my charging to the http://www.motorworks.co.uk/vlive/TheShed/PDF/ELA00045.pdf Works perfect! Now I can use my heated grips as much as I want... Ignition is also electronic: Piranha.

Rode my '83 R100RS from the mountains of NC to very rural Alabama, exactly 247.3 miles.

    Ran out of gas.

Oh well. At least I know how far it will go at 75-80 mph. :D

Not charging? Diode board? Check all your electrical connections; pull off and coat with dialectic grease and you'll be good.

    You need a G/S or GS :D

Love the nature and gravel roads of Sweden! Will be going (by car) to ALV in Vimmerby for this years summer vaction. Maybe I should bring the bike on a trailer :ricky

Well, during these days, this WAS the G/S... OK, maybe some better tires. The RS is not that bad off road when you get used to it. Good ground clearance, very stable, great motor. The standing position could be more right up, but it's OK. ;)

I agree, an RS is a totally competent machine off road, even in sand. Just avoid big holes, big rocks and serious mud holes.
Standing up on the pegs involves having ones nose further forward than the front axle, it's just like flying!

    Exactly that feeling! :)

Today I kitted it up with a double USB connection, a tire pump and manometer and also an outside termometer.

Since the pump doesn't fit in the original holder, I placed it on the right bag frame.

The USB connector is hanging under the left side of the tank where I hope it wouldn't be too greasy and wet. I case, I have to move it to the tool box.
