I could mount an agrument that the Sicily comment is further evidence of peer pressure being the main thing that dictates behaviour. If these same people would wear ATGATT at home, why would they suddenly change when they get to a holiday destination? They do it, because everyone else is doing it.

Being hotter than home as a reason isn't going to fly.........

If your argument is in fact true then I will mount an argument that peer pressure is the reason that some wear ATGATT. If they really are concerned about safety why would they ride sans gear when they get to a holiday destination?

Then I would say you're understood my point, and were 100% in agreement. The desire to fit in with our peers is the most powerful influence on our behaviour. Some adopt positive practices to fit in with their chosen group (ATGATT), and some adopt negative practices (wearing little protective gear).

None of us like to admit the level that others influence us, so we kid ourselves that we have made an 'individual decision'. Show me a person who really truely doesn't give a dam what others think, and I'll show you a narcisist.

I bet that most people who are riding in Sicily live there all the time.

You know, I'm an older rider. I usually wear one of two Tour master jackets; on is hi-viz, the other is black...or used to be:lol3 I ride the way I ride. Shuberth helmet, deer skin riding gloves...usually just jeans, and over the ankle boots. What I wear, does not affect how I ride, however, on the very few occasions when I've taken a short ride without gear, I've felt VERY vulnerable.

So, on those very few occasions when you've taken a short ride without gear, were you:
    1) peer pressured into trying to fit in.
    2) uninformed about the perils of what might happen to you if you crash
    3) totally clueless

Shouldn't one of the options be:

    4) knew what should be done, but didn't because of time/effort/short distance to travel etc.

I have never owned not will ever own a Harley. However I think the OP's post closely approaches "Harley-Rider bashing".

The reason why I say this, is that there are a whole bunch of riders aboard a wide variety of machines - including very pretty lady riders and pillions - who negotiate very dense & dangerous city traffic at speeds not far below that which Harley riders cruise at.

Some may very well wear a crash helmet but often have very little other protection.

There are plenty of "I'm ATGATT" threads on this forum.

I would like to politely ask the OP why he has singled out Harley riders?

I single them out for my question because they are by far the riders who wear little to no gear. My conservative guess would be, here in AZ, 90% or fewer wear nothing but sunglasses.

So what? Live your own life. Your question was answered a long time ago.

Don't start with the "social cost" bullshit. And that's exactly what it is. So many preach propaganda as fact it's sickening.
