I had to park it in the shop after finding it changing it's own oil, again. I know I bought a V-twin, but I didn't expect it to chronically be leaking oil so often. :cry Seems like I'm having to replace every seal in the engine, one at a time. Getting tired of :ear the "Harley" comments from the missus.

There were several drops and small puddles found under it in a parking lot Saturday. Closer inspection revealed the skid plate and center stand were covered with a thin film. Spots all over the back wheel too. Oil seen on both left and right side cases coming from above. No low pressure light, so I rode it home with the forty pound bag of dog food tied on tight. Only busted 100 mph once, cuz I thought it best to take it easy on the bleeding beast. :D

I'm betting on that pesky (oil pressure?) sending unit on rear of the front cylinder as the most likely source that would put oil down both sides.

After tweaking my leg riding dirt on the DRZ the next day I'll probably not get to take all the bodywork off until next weekend. Not to mention the unreasonably cold weather we are expecting over the next few days.

Heck, it might freeze tonight! :eek1 Doesn't the weather know this is Texas! We usually don't do the "other" season until January or February!

I installed a 50 tooth rear sprocket from Sprocket Specialists. It's all-aluminum and cost $100 including the coating. Really light. The mounting bolts probably weigh more than the sprocket. Overall fit and finish was good. I had to file the inside edge and put a slight bevel on it to make it slide over my hub. Then it tapped right into place with a rubber mallet. The bolt heads fit snugly against the inner race. I found that my current set-up of 16/45 wasn't low enough for some of the gnarly Jeep trails that I ride. Unfortunately my currnent chain isn't long enough. I'm ordering a 120 from CJ Designs. It might be hard keeping the front wheel on the ground now! :lol3

It sounds like it hasn't had a good coating of dirt and dust to seal up the motor. :rofl

Went on the usual ride to Mozambique last week after some HEAVY rain (150km ). Hit a big puddle and came down, engine cutout switch works , Looked back , Blimey KTM 525 EXC is doing the Yellow Submarine thing . Had to fish it out . pushed it out and about 1 hour later got it started but by then the misses was there with the pickup. And full of jokes .:D

Anyway checked the oil to find some water got inside !:huh Crap how on earth , the air filter was sopping wet. Somehow i was very lucky not to get a hydrolock , the water could only get into oil via carburetor.

Changed the oil and filters , it was not black but a grey color, , even washed the inside with a liter of petrol , and left it for the day to dry out , slowly pushing on the kick starter to turn engine a bit to get all the oily water out.

Filled her up and it seems there is still some water left in the system as the oil level inspection window is covered with what looks likes a thin film of water drops . Looks white and can't see through it. Is that moisture condensing there

Damm what now ? Must i do it all over or not ? how about i leave the oil filter cap of and ask the water to kindly leave ?? Or can i just go for a long ride and it will get out of the system?

Actually yesterday: I Put it away until I receive CJ's WP upgrade!

I went for a little rain-ride to get some saddle time in and do some Xmas shopping yesterday, the first real ride after flushing the cooling system and changing the oil. At that time I knew the WP seal was probably leaking, there was a little coolant in the oil and the filter was deformed. I didn't think it was bad because the oil was pretty clean when I test rode it and when I changed the oil after putting about 100miles on it. I knew I'd eventually have to change the seal and shaft so I ordered CJ's kit a couple days later.

Anyway, I figured I'd be out more than half a day, maybe 150 - 200miles. I stopped at about 50miles (the coolant level was low) and checked the oil: :huh It looked like cappuccino with extra foam on top! Called it a day.

Anyway, dummy me, I didn't ask the PO about the WP seal when I test rode it. :baldy I know, I know: caveat emptor. I was so excited to find a reasonably priced 990 I was blinded by desire! (for the bike :ddog)

What torques me off is that he didn't even hint that it might need attention. Oh well, lesson learned, moving on.

Led swap out. Yep. I broke a front turn signal, figured I'd swap everything out to led. Brake light, running lights, turn indicators. Easy! Right?
So I go on ebay and order some cheap arrow looking ones.
They suck! Not visible in the daytime.
    And bad a night.
So I experimented with some rumble concept signals.
Some of the led's didn't work. And they just aren't bright!
So I searched, and searched. Finally!
I ended up spending $140 for 4 rizoma zero 11's. well made. Very bright at night and visible during daytime.[IMG]
Cool frosted design. Visible from all angles.[IMG]
    Brake lights ordered from superbrightleds.com
    1156 red and 195 red
    [IMG][IMG][IMG]
Oh! And a led relay from mondo motors.
    Very satisfied!
    UPDATE;
So I used a relay for LEDs, it eliminates the use of resistors. The rizoma s came with all the necessary resistors though.
Yes, they are visible from the back and sides. But I can't see them while in the normal seated position. The 950 fairing hides them from my line of sight. And they are half the length of OE indicators. They are more flexible than OE also.
I had to splice and dice them in. I used waterproof 16-18 gauge bullet connectors (female) as the indicators come with male bullet connectors. The rear ones are bit of a pain due to the taillight wiring cluster.
Tight fit. Got the bullet connectors @ pep boys. I wrapped every connection with "rescue tape" self fusing silicone tape.
Got it at OSH hardware store and amazon carries it. Good stuff.
And I used red LEDs for the taillight bulbs. Recommended for red lenses.
    Taillight is super bright!

Good info. Why the need for a relay? Always read a resistor may be needed due to the difference in power requirement but that was on other bikes.

Do the Rizmo signals light up on the back side? Look like they're clear and seem like it would be annoying at nite, esp. with LED brightness. (Checked the site - so how bad is the rear flashing from the front signals?

Are they plug and play or do you have to change the end connections? (Did they have a connector for their wiring kit that worked for the OEM connector?)

What color inserts did you get for the rear? All white since the cover is red or red LED as well?

How flexible are they in case of a fall----I mean when I fall
    Thanks

Snapped a clutch cable on my 640 Duke a couple of weeks ago 10 miles from home in traffic... that was fun getting home! :rofl

Ordered the new Motion Pro cable today, well see how replacement goes. Id really like to reaplce it with a sportbike style perch and clutch lever (CRG or similar) anyone have any ideas on that?

Well, I've been doing quite a bit to my bike. I thought it might be interesting to try to compress the last year in one post. The full story is in my build thread (sig line) but it's a bit epic. Here's the Clif Notes...

Took it apart a few times - more than a few really. Mostly I just wanted to powdercoat the swingarm black. Did that.

Put on a 320 rotor and made a bracket for a 4 piston brake.

    Brembo master.

    Blew up my engine.

Bought a 990SMR engine from Pyndon. Beginning of Mission Creep.

Thought, "I should make my own exhaust!" Ordered tube.

Spent the better part of a year learning how to weld stainless.

Left is first effort, right is end effort.

    Made an exhaust.

    Bought some of these.

One year of work, many dollars, lost 20+hp...

Considered quitting in disgust. Friends convinced me to keep going. Kept going. Found and fixed exhaust problems.

Found carb problems. Developed custom billet velocity stacks.

Clawed my way past old hp rating. Kept clawing, right past the 990R. (I'm red) So happy!

Painted the bike so it felt new.

Had Woody rebuild my wheels so they were new.

Helped my friend Chris develop the stacks, a TPS mount and lighter springs for the FCR's.

Decided we really needed a choke to make the carbs livable - developed a choke.

Finally put it all together. Wow, it works.

So glad I didn't quit. So happy I decide to start work on a 1080 big bore kit.

So that's what I did to my KTM. Now you're up to date. Have my sights set on 120rwhp. We'll see...

I don't know what's more amazing... your bike's transformation over the last few years... Your patience in the process... Or your ability to summorize it all in the "What Did".

Yours is always a great inspirational "live vicariously thru" thread.

Through it all... do you feel like your bike has transformed permanently into a slab grabber, with the hp curves, exhaust flow, torque curve, suspension and wheelset? If so, was there a point of no returning to a dual sport bike. Or does it easily retain it's off roading character with a few swapouts and adjustments?

    Thanks for the R&D.
