SURRENDER OAK FESTIVAL
Call for Vendors, Exhibitors and Demonstrators:
As we do every year, the Citronelle Historical Preservation Society is hosting the Surrender Oak Festival on May 3, 2014. This annual event attracts hundreds of people, young, old, and in between, to Citronelle every year. The festival is free and open to the public. The festival will begin at 9:00 AM and conclude at 4:00 PM. All festival activities, with the exception of the Civil War Surrender Reenactment, will take place at the Citronelle Depot Museum located at 19000 South Center Street in Citronelle, AL.
Every year, we have various vendors and demonstrators at the festival and plan several activities and demonstrations throughout the day. A few of the activities and demonstrations we have had in the past are as follows: Horse and Buggy Rides, Pony Rides, Children’s Train Rides, Petting Zoo, Choctaw Native American Dancers, Quilters, Wool Spinning Demonstration, Antique Cars and Tractors, Blacksmith demonstration, Flint Knapper demonstration, and much, much more.
We are again calling for those who are interested in demonstrating their traditional skills, selling their wares, and exhibiting their products. Vendors and Exhibitors who are only selling their wares and products and who do not demonstrate a traditional skill are charged $20 per space. Demonstrators are not charged and may sell their wares. Surrender of the Confederate departments of Alabama, Mississippi and East Louisiana regiments (May 4)[edit]

The documentation of the surrender of Lieutenant General Richard Taylor's small force in Alabama was another stage in the process of concluding the American Civil War. The son of former U.S. President Zachary Taylor, Richard Taylor commanded the Confederate troops in the Department of Alabama, Mississippi and East Louisiana of about ten thousand troops.[23] On May 4 Taylor's subordinate Col. J.Q. Chenowith surrendered the Department to Union officer Col. John A. Hottenstein.[24]
Mobile, Alabama, had fallen to Union control on April 12, 1865.[25] Reports reached Taylor of the meeting between Johnston and Sherman about the terms of Johnston's surrender of his armies. Taylor agreed to meet with Major General Edward R. S. Canby for a conference north of Mobile, and they settled on a 48 hour's truce on April 30. Taylor agreed to a surrender after this time elapsed, which he did on May 4 at Citronelle, Alabama.[23]
Lieutenant General Nathan Bedford Forrest surrendered on May 9 at Gainesville, Alabama. His troops were included with Taylor's. The terms stated that Taylor could retain control of the railway and river steamers to be able to get his men as near as possible to their homes. Taylor stayed in Meridian, Mississippi, until the last man was sent on his way. He was paroled May 13 and then went to Mobile to join Canby. Canby took him to his home in New Orleans by boat.[24]
