I think this is a fabulous thing you are doing! I currently live in Montgomery Co. but was raised in Botetourt Co. and I am very familiar with the area (Botetourt, Roanoke, and Montgomery) and many of it's back/dirt roads. I am happy to help you in any way I can. I currently own two sport bikes but I have been lurking here for several weeks and have begun searching for a suitable adventure bike. The sort of ride you propose sounds really fun. Keep up the good work!

I started working on the same kind of thing with forest service maps, I like hold in my hand paper maps, the motor vehical use maps show the forest service roads but are to small for planning. I guess in need a gps.

Not necessarily, you can use google earth or google maps for an overlay. If you would like to stay with paper, county DOT and/or a Delorme Gazetteer with a highlighter would do.

Don't think that you have to own a gps, the TAT was laid out without one. Although I prefer to use one, it will never be mandatory.

I used to have a pile of the individual maps. You used to be able to walk into any VDOT headquarters and grab numerous (different counties) maps. I have the WVDOT map book. Picked it up in the late eighties, early ninties

Great job on the trail!! Kinda hard to determine but it looks like you are using the Peters Mills trail(Taskers Gap-North).(?) Just make sure there is mention of the fee in that area to the folks wanting to run your trail.

Error Cooled excellent work. I have just started to try and put a Southern DS loop together. Would you mind if we possibly used part of your route in the loop? I am trying to include the coastal lowlands and the mountains so it would be running further south. I have this post bookmarked lots of good info. Especially the link from Intothenew-holy sh*t it has just about everything you need! Here is link if anyone is interested or can add some input/advice. Thanks

Awesome work. I may well be wrong, but IIRC you don't need to pay a fee to use the fire road at Peter's Mill if you are plated (but I haven't been there in a few years).

I'll have to contact the office in Edinburg to check on that. I assumed(yeah I know) that any vehicle on the trail system had to have a permit.

EDIT: just called and you DO need the permit no matter what section or what you are riding/driving.

Hey gang, this project is still alive and well. I finished up the route and options over Christmas.

I am setting aside 6 days total down and back to explore the route. Realistically I think 3-4 days down will be reasonable.

A big tank will definitely be a plus in terms of peace of mind. I think a 120 mile tank will work well overall.
