Anyone know what a new wheel costs? Has this problem been fixed with the newer bikes yet? Being in Peru is a bit of an issue, because there is no dealer never mind dealer warrantee here . If the new bikes are still being made with this problem, I´d like to know so I can send Woody a "rim to ream" so to speak. Thanks in Advance. BTW, YETIGS, did you add me to your list?
and here's the link to all MAXBMW parts fiches.. http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/fiche.aspx your F800GS http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/DiagramsMain.aspx?vid=51598
Max is my local dealer. They had never heard of it, and it was frankly a bit of a pain in the ass to get it replaced (or should I say, get the service manager to actually LISTEN to what I was saying). They're one of the top volume dealers in the country and hadn't seen any other bikes with this issue yet (goddamn poseur Yankee riders...)
So the correct mesurement is 46.98mm. So assuming one can find micrometer measurement capabilities locally then one can check their spkt and disc sides and they should both measure 46.98mm.
does that mean they finally heard and understod your situation??? if not then,,, tell ya what,,,ill give steve mauk or ben or max stratten a buzz in their ear tomorrow,,these two have never let me down,,nor i them....we'll see what tomorrow or tuesday brings,,reason being ,,,i believe they are closed on mondays,,, later woody
i just reread post #15 in this link http://www.advrider.com/forums/showpost.php?p=11130431&postcount=15 if the bearing =47mm+/-00mm and crush=.001''=.0254mm then the ID you need is: 47.000mm-.0254mm= 46.9746m=46.975mm woody
Well, it means that I was finally able to get them to say "yeah, those bearings are failing" and replace them. I tried to explain the machining issue and excessive crush as the cause but the fact that this has been talked about here and figured out "on the internet" pretty much got the "ah, okay" nod and blow-off. So the bearings are new, but nothing was done about the root of the problem. There's no way they even measured the bore (not that it would even mean squat if the tech in question had -- he didn't even put the right seal back in and I had to make another trip in to get it straightened out). I expect to have to show a pattern of several dead bearings before I get anywhere on the hub (unless a general bulletin or whatever comes out). I understand that's the nature of the way the Motorrad warranty beast; though I'm not necessarily happy about it, I expect that if the bearings on a Vstrom or other jap bike had crapped out, I'd be told to pound sand in the first place. Are Steve and Joe out of the New York store? I don't know them. Tom is the service manager at the NH shop. I also saw Max while I was there but didn't bug him as I respect the chain of command. Nate
Just talked to my service advisor and he was surprised my rotor side bearing has failed again in 4,000 miles. I'm bringing the wheel into him on Saturday so they can measure the hub and put new bearings in it. He said that if it measures out of spec he'll try to get BMW to approve letting Woody fix it.
Has anyone been hurt yet? You guys have me scared, as I have a decent trip starting in two days with a 6,000 mile bike. Stranded/trip over early sucks yes, but wiping out at 70 is a whole new story....
No one has been hurt yet that I'm aware of although two people have had close calls as reported earlier in this thread. I would definitely check your rear wheel bearings and see how they feel. If they're smooth that's great. If they're rough I would take them to the dealer and get them replaced ASAP.
folks,,, what i'm trying to make you aware of is that if all you are asking for or settling for is a bearing swap,,, well then knowing what causes the bearings to fry should yield no surprise that they will sooner /later fail again and again til the cause of the failures is rectified... sure a bearing swap will give ya another couple of thousand miles before a relapse ,,,,but REALLY,,how many times do you want to do that????,,,how far are you going to be able to ride without the gnawing chatter in the back of your head starts whispering doubts c'mon we are adventure riders,,,the adventurer preps and rides a bike that will take him there and back,,, the adventure shouldn't be be about if my bike will make it there and back on the bearings that are in my bike... or am i just missing something w Psssst..once more....you guys are slowly going to go insane, changing those bearings over n over again and expecting a differen't result !
Oh I knew it wasn't going to last Woody. (Maybe I hoped it was just the bearings but I knew . . .) I also knew that my dealer wouldn't do anything if the bearings just failed once. So I let them swap them out under warranty and then have been checking them every 1,000 miles or so. Sure enough, when I checked them yesterday they were starting to get gritty. Since I have now had two bearings fail within 9,000 total miles my dealer is willing to look to see if there's another cause for the failures. To their credit, they are very aware of who you are (you just built some new wheels for another customer of theirs) and respect your knowledge of all things round and spokey. When I told them what your opinion is of the cause of the bearing failures, they readily agreed to measure the bearings and forward the request to have you machine the hub up the line. Whether this happens or not . . . If it doesn't I'll write a nice letter to BMW NA and then send my wheel to you to get it fixed. And then send BMW a bill.
Nope... you are not missing anything. Woody you have it right. If mine fail or even feel notchy once they are headed your way for a fix if BMW doesn't agree to replace them with ones that are in spec that is... So far with 6500 miles mine seem fine. Now where's my torque wrench to check them again?
So do I understand correctly, that drrags is the only one to have his hub replaced under warranty? Cisco
lol, I'm usually not that lucky. My life is full of swimming upstream I can't believe I'm the only one!
My sprocket bearing is now a bit rough after 21,000km, I have been checking the rear every 2 to 3000 km and until now all has been ok. To be safe I'm going to replace all 3 bearings and seals in the rear. To save me a bit of home work what after market bearing and seals part number and brand have people been swapping theirs out with? Thanks.
