the shift drum bearings are ball not roller

I think #23 is what you're dealing with:

it's a two-row needle bearing, and the race is thin as in your photograph. As it's an "04 she's had plenty of miles to wear that thing out, and the clutches are known for being tricky on the LC8's

put her on the sidestand and pull the outer cover off the clutch and start there- no oil will drain out, even if you have to take the RH engine cover off to get futher into the clutch (and to start fishing the rest of the bearing out! :eek1)

Don't run her until you figure it out... but I'll bet you that dime in the picture that's your part!

My bet is that it's part #23 as well.

I found the same needle bearings in one of my oil changes on my 520. Problem was, I changed fluids on all 3 of my bikes that day. Took a week to find the same schematic for the whereabouts of a needle bearing in a KTM motor, I was told that is the only one in there or at least in my 520. I did ride the bike shortly after that and it seemed fine - only a very short mile or so - and it has been parked ever since. Motor is coming out very soon, it needed a good going thru anyways

Sorry your in the same boat (Bust Out Another Thousand) :cry

Looking through the manual, did a search for needle bearing.

Idler gear on the counter shaft.

Reduction gear off the flywheel, magneto.

Timing gear, (too big to be one in photo)

Clutch, as shown too big to be one in photo.

:evil I looked thru my parts book that came with my bike the first time around, and believe it or not, there are quite a few roller bearings in the 950 motor.
The problem was mentally sorting out which one 'fits' the look and description of what I had in hand... :2cry
    Thanks for your reply. :clap

Here's a unique concept- TAKE THE BLOODY THING APART.

Much easier to determine which bearing has let go when it's disassembled. :D

That looks like a closest match, if you look at this photo by Steverino:

But then again maybe not.. Needles you pulled out are really short.
