They need to come up with some money to get me on the track. They are not as expensive as i thought though.
If you put a little effort in, you'd be amazed at the local sponsorship you can get. Get a bunch of smaller ones, they add up to enough for entries and tires. In turn, make sure you support your sponsor's promotional events. be there when they have that sale promo, bike pretty and on display, that sort of thing. It will pay off when you need to budget for next season. I raced for 18 years, purely for the fun of it. I had a career, knew racing wasn't it, I did it because I needed to go warp factor 8 with my hair on fire. Fun.
Hope WERA is better today than 30 years ago. Story: Back in my 20's (yeah 30+ years back) raced AAMRR for 2 years. Moderately good results in the novice mod-prod division. NH Speedway- known as Bryar back then- and Bridgehampton- known as nothing now. Looking for more race weekends I went to a WERA race at the Bridge. First race keeping the leaders in sight, heavy braking before the right hander just before the back straight. No flags, no warning- puddle of oil on the track. I think I bounced when I hit the ground. Holee chit that hurt. P.S. Years ago I read something pretty funny in Cycle magazine (remember that?) "have you ever crashed so hard that you couldn't pick your nose for a week?" That was me.
I raced last year, did most of the WERA west rounds. Had a blast. Stopped racing to go to Alaska with my pit buddy (gf) this summer.
AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHA! Racing is expensive. Even at the amateur level. They say to factor the costs by adding up all your tools, equipment, bike, protective gear, hauling equipment, etc... and throw it off a cliff. Could you deal with that loss? Its very easy to lose the front end of a 'not that expensive' racebike and send it tumbling down the track, trashing every piece of it. Done that. It is fun, though. Where else can you go as fast as you and your equipment can go, racing head to head against other people? But be prepared for the costs. Good protective gear alone will set you back at least $2k. Tires every other weekend... or every weekend if you race a modern 600 or more. Replacement parts, time to work on the bike, etc...
Been going to the WERA racing since i was 6 years old just going to the Road Atlanta rounds. It has been a steadily been losing spectators for the past 10 years. If you go to a Grand National Final in October Road A is a ghost town. The WERA races used to be as big as an AMA weekend now you see the same bikes running a multitude of classes and a reduction in racers as well.
Yep you have to accept you could be trailering home a hunk of scrap metal and happy your not in the hospital.
